Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming part of the world our children are growing up in. From search engines and learning tools to creative apps, voice assistants, recommendations, and writing support, AI is no longer something that belongs only in the future. It is already part of everyday life.
For many parents, this shift brings both excitement and uncertainty.
How does AI actually work?
How will it affect the way children learn?
Can AI support reading without replacing teachers or parents?
How can kids use AI safely, responsibly, and creatively?
To help families begin exploring these questions, Chalky hosted an interactive AI Meet + Greet for parents and children at Richmond Hill Central Library, with the support of Richmond Hill City Councillor Simon Cui.

The event was designed for children in Grades 3–8 and their families. Our goal was simple: make AI easier to understand, connect it to real learning experiences, and give families a chance to see Chalky AI in action.
Rather than presenting AI as something overly technical or intimidating, the session focused on practical, family-friendly explanations and examples that parents and children could relate to.
The event brought together families, young learners, and community supporters for a hands-on introduction to AI-powered learning.
Why We Created This AI Workshop for Families
AI is becoming part of education, but many families are still trying to understand what that really means.

A community workshop where parents and children explored AI together at Richmond Hill Central Library.
Some parents are curious and excited. They see AI as a tool that may help children ask better questions, access more personalized support, and explore learning in new ways.
Other parents are more cautious. They may worry about children relying too much on technology, receiving inaccurate information, losing creativity, or using AI without understanding how it works.
Both perspectives are valid.
That is why conversations like this matter.
Children do not need to become AI experts overnight, but they do need age-appropriate guidance. Parents do not need to understand every technical detail, but they do need enough clarity to support their children’s learning and decision-making.
At Chalky, we believe AI should be introduced in a way that is approachable for families, safe and age-appropriate for children, connected to real learning goals, supportive of curiosity and critical thinking, and guided by parents, teachers, and thoughtful design.
The AI Meet + Greet gave families a starting point: a space to learn, ask questions, and see how AI can support children’s reading and learning experience.
What Happened During the Chalky AI Meet + Greet
During the session, families were introduced to the basics of artificial intelligence through a simple and interactive format.
The workshop was not designed as a technical lecture. Instead, it encouraged parents and children to think about AI through examples they could recognize from daily life.
We talked about how AI can help generate ideas, answer questions, recognize patterns, recommend content, and support learning. We also discussed why human thinking still matters, especially when it comes to asking good questions, checking information, understanding context, and making thoughtful decisions.
Children had the opportunity to see how AI can feel interactive and engaging, while parents were able to better understand how tools like Chalky can support reading development in a structured and responsible way.

Young participants shared their ideas and explored how AI can support learning.
The event also included a demonstration of Chalky AI, showing how the platform can help children discover books, interact with reading content, and stay motivated through a more personalized learning experience.
Topics We Covered

Families explored AI through practical topics, from how it works to how it can support reading and learning.
1. What AI Is
We began with a simple explanation of artificial intelligence.
AI can be understood as technology designed to recognize patterns, process information, and generate responses or suggestions based on what it has learned from data.
For children, we explained AI in a practical way: it is not magic, and it is not a person. It is a tool that can help with certain tasks when used carefully.
This helped make the topic less intimidating and easier for families to discuss together.
2. How AI Works at a High Level
We also talked about how AI works in a simplified way.
Families learned that AI systems are trained using large amounts of information. They look for patterns and use those patterns to predict, suggest, organize, or generate responses.
For children, this is an important idea. When kids understand that AI is based on patterns and information, they can begin to see why AI can be helpful — and also why it can sometimes make mistakes.
This opened the door to an important conversation: AI can support learning, but it should not replace thinking.
3. How AI May Change Our Daily Lives
Another key topic was how AI is already beginning to change the way people live, work, communicate, and learn.
We discussed examples such as AI-powered search, recommendations, learning platforms, creative tools, writing support, voice assistants, translation tools, and personalized learning experiences.
For children, this helped connect AI to tools and experiences they may already recognize. For parents, it created a broader view of how AI may continue shaping education and future careers.
The goal was not to make AI feel scary, but to help families understand that AI literacy is becoming an important part of digital literacy.
4. How Kids Can Use AI Responsibly
One of the most important parts of the conversation was responsible AI use.
Children need to know that AI can help them brainstorm, practice, explore, and learn — but it should not do all the thinking for them.
We talked about the importance of asking clear questions, checking information, understanding that AI can be wrong, using AI as a helper rather than a shortcut, keeping personal information private, talking to adults when unsure, and using technology in a balanced way.
This part of the workshop was especially important for parents. Many families want children to benefit from new technology, but they also want to make sure children use it safely and thoughtfully.
5. How AI Can Support Reading and Learning
The workshop also explored how AI can support children’s reading journey.
Reading is not just about finishing books. It involves comprehension, vocabulary, confidence, curiosity, discussion, and the ability to connect ideas.
AI can support reading by helping children discover books that match their interests, find reading material at an appropriate level, ask questions about a story, practice comprehension skills, build confidence with reading routines, and engage with books in a more interactive way.
For parents, this showed how AI can be used with a clear educational purpose. The goal is not to replace books, teachers, or family reading time. The goal is to create more support around the reading experience.
6. Chalky AI in Action

Families explored Chalky AI hands-on during the interactive session.
Families also had the chance to learn more about Chalky and see how Chalky AI is designed to support reading engagement.
Chalky is building an AI-powered learning platform focused on helping children discover books, stay motivated, and build stronger reading habits.
During the session, families were introduced to how Chalky can help children interact with reading in a more guided and engaging way. Instead of leaving families alone with a long list of books, Chalky helps make reading feel more personalized, structured, and approachable.
For parents, this can reduce the pressure of trying to find the “right” book or create reading activities from scratch.
For children, it can make reading feel more interactive and rewarding.
Why AI Education Matters for Parents
Parents play a key role in how children understand and use technology.
When parents understand AI better, they are more prepared to guide their children. They can ask better questions, set healthier boundaries, and help kids use AI in a way that supports learning instead of replacing effort.
Many parents do not need highly technical explanations. They need clear, practical answers:
What is this tool doing?
How can my child use it?
What should I watch out for?
How do I know if it is helping or hurting learning?
That is why family-centered AI education is so important. It helps parents feel less left behind and more confident in supporting their children.
At the Richmond Hill session, we wanted parents to leave with a stronger understanding of AI and a clearer sense of how it can fit into their child’s learning journey.

How Chalky Connects AI with Reading

Chalky brings together adaptive reading, progress insights, and interactive learning tools for families.
At Chalky, our focus is not AI for the sake of AI.
Our focus is reading.
We believe AI can be useful when it supports a real learning goal. For us, that goal is helping children become more engaged, confident, and thoughtful readers.
Many families struggle with reading motivation. Some children do not know what to read next. Others feel overwhelmed by books that are too difficult. Some lose interest during school breaks. Some need more interaction, encouragement, or structure.
Chalky is designed to help with these challenges by combining reading support with interactive technology.
Through Chalky, families can explore ways to make reading more personalized and engaging, while still keeping parents connected to the learning process.
AI should not remove the human part of learning. It should support it.
That is the heart of Chalky’s approach.
What Families Took Away

Parents and children joined the session to learn, ask questions, and explore AI together.
By the end of the session, families had explored AI from several angles: what it is, how it works, how it may affect daily life, and how it can support children’s reading.
The biggest takeaway was that AI does not need to feel intimidating.
When explained clearly, AI can become a topic families discuss together. Parents can guide children with more confidence. Children can become more thoughtful users of technology. And learning platforms can use AI to support curiosity, reading, and engagement in responsible ways.
The event gave families a chance to ask questions, explore ideas, and imagine how technology might support children’s learning in the years ahead.
